Bottleneck is a free MIT desktop app, an Electron client for GitHub pull requests built for AI-native teams that run many background agents, where the human reads, comments, and merges agent-authored PRs and the app itself renders no judgment.
What it is #
A native Electron app (TypeScript, React 18, Monaco editor) that reproduces the GitHub PR experience with near-instant navigation: incremental sync over the GitHub GraphQL API, a SQLite local cache for offline work, multi-select bulk actions (merge, close, label), automatic grouping of PRs by prefix (feat/, fix/), and branch comparison for reading several agents’ attempts at one ticket side by side. The maker is Alex Reibman (Bottleneck Labs, San Francisco), the repository is MIT, and installers ship for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows through GitHub releases, with development being fork-and-run-from-source. It is explicitly review-only: no AI analysis, no checks, no verdicts; the features are speed, grouping, and bulk triage for the PR flood that parallel agents produce, including the bake-off case where you throw multiple agents at one ticket and pick the best branch.
Status #
Dormant: the repository was created 2025-09-11, pushed 2025-12-04, and the v0.1.19 release of the same day is the newest of twelve, all on the v0.1.x line between 2025-10-09 and 2025-12-04. 157 stars, 22 forks, and 56 open issues as of 2026-10-31. Reception never arrived: the Show HN thread of 2025-10-18 holds 2 points and zero comments, I found no third-party writeup, and nothing has shipped in the eleven months since, though the maker’s site is still live with the installers working and no rename or shutdown notice.
Strengths #
- Built for exactly the surface this category’s other review clients avoid: a queue of PRs from several agents, with prefix grouping and bulk actions that treat the queue as the unit instead of one change at a time.
- The bake-off comparison (several agents’ branches on one ticket in one place) is a review mechanism no other column names: the human picks the winning agent attempt the way they would compare candidate diffs.
- Fast by design: GraphQL incremental sync and a local SQLite cache attack the slow-tab problem of github.com at queue scale, with keyboard shortcuts throughout.
- MIT, with diffs rendered in Monaco, so editor-native reviewers lose little moving in.
Cautions #
- Dormant since 2025-12-04 with 56 open issues and a single maintainer: adopt only if the current build works for you, and expect no fixes.
- The community record is one 2-point, zero-comment Show HN thread and no independent coverage, so the star count is uncorroborated by any technical discussion.
- No Linux build; macOS and Windows only, and the development setup insists on npm (bun is known not to work).
- It judges nothing by design, so it needs a pairing from the rest of this category, or the human’s full attention, before anything merges.
Pricing #
Free and MIT; the app talks to GitHub with your own account, and no hosted tier or paid plan exists as of 2026-10-31.
Compared to #
- Hunk: the terminal diff stream over agent changesets; choose Hunk to stay in the terminal, Bottleneck when the queue lives on GitHub and bulk merge and close actions matter.
- PR Lens: diagrams drawn into one PR’s comment thread; Bottleneck is the queue-level client for many PRs and renders no interpretation of any change.
- Crit: the browser surface over plans, diffs, and running apps with comments flowing back to agents; Bottleneck stays GitHub-PR-native and offers no agent feedback loop beyond GitHub reviews themselves.
- github.com itself: the baseline Bottleneck reproduces faster; if a browser tab per PR works for you, nothing here is missing.
Bottom line #
Recommended for teams deep in the parallel-background-agent workflow whose bottleneck (the name is the thesis) is triaging the PR flood on github.com, and who accept an unmaintained tool. Not for Linux users, not for anyone who needs support or fixes, and never as the judging layer.
Changes #
- 2026-10-31 - Created from the code-review handoff resolved on the judges-nothing family, profiling the dormant desktop PR client for parallel-agent review queues.
